PDF vs DOCX for ATS

How we score

PDF preserves appearance; export selectable text rather than a scan.

DOCX preserves editable paragraphs; avoid putting essential information in floating shapes or headers.

There is no format that every ATS handles identically. Compare extracted text and follow the employer’s requirements.

Start with the submission instructions

If the vacancy specifies a format, follow it. If both are accepted, choose a clean export that preserves the text you need. This tool supports selectable-text PDF and DOCX; it cannot declare one format universally better across every employer configuration.

PDF: inspect the text layer

PDF preserves a fixed visual layout, but a scan may contain no usable text. Try selecting the text, then inspect the scanner’s reading order. If separate columns mix or bullet content disappears, return to the source document, simplify its layout and export a new text-based PDF.

DOCX: inspect document structure

DOCX usually stores editable paragraphs, but important content may sit in tables, headers or floating elements. Keep contact details in body text and inspect extraction. A table warning is a reason to review, not a claim that all tables fail in all systems.

Use a final-file check

Text pasted into the checker cannot carry the original file’s layout metadata. After editing, upload the actual PDF or DOCX you will submit. Compare key fields and bullet order before relying on the report. Scanned files require OCR elsewhere before this tool can read them.

FAQ

Questions before you upload?

English resumes only. PDF text extraction and DOCX paragraphs are checked; visual fonts, all tables, and every ATS layout behavior cannot be verified. Scanned PDFs need OCR elsewhere.

Is one format always safer?+

If the vacancy specifies a format, follow it. If both are accepted, choose a clean export that preserves the text you need. This tool supports selectable-text PDF and DOCX; it cannot declare one format universally better across every employer configuration.

Why can a PDF look right but extract badly?+

PDF preserves a fixed visual layout, but a scan may contain no usable text. Try selecting the text, then inspect the scanner’s reading order. If separate columns mix or bullet content disappears, return to the source document, simplify its layout and export a new text-based PDF.

Does a table warning mean DOCX is unusable?+

DOCX usually stores editable paragraphs, but important content may sit in tables, headers or floating elements. Keep contact details in body text and inspect extraction. A table warning is a reason to review, not a claim that all tables fail in all systems.

Is the full resume check free?+

Yes. You can see every score, issue and extracted line without an account. Basic checks, two-JD comparison and report printing are free.

Does my resume leave my device?+

Basic checks run in your browser. Files and job descriptions are not uploaded. AI rewriting is optional and sends only the selected text to our server and Cloudflare Workers AI after your consent.

Is this my actual ATS score?+

No. Employers use different systems and rules. This is a reproducible heuristic check, not an employer score, ranking prediction or guarantee. AI is used only for optional rewriting.
